ALL ACTION AT THE SKINNER'S PET FOODS NATIONAL TEAM CHASE CHAMPIONSHIP 2019

Skinner’s Pet Foods National Championship, Tur Langton 31st March

Team Ride-Away 1 reclaimed their title at the Skinner’s Pet Foods National Championship in a nail-biting battle with arch rivals Fox Grant Dot Com and multiple winners Relentless.

The beefed up and refreshed Fernie course at Tur Langton had taken plenty of prisoners, including their second and third teams, when the 2016 champions set off from a late draw.

However, Joe Stevenson, Charlotte Alexander, Katie Richards and Lisette Davies meant business from the start, snaking up the first line of switchback hedges at the tightest of angles. Up front, Joe and the big chestnut Slim were setting a hot pace ahead of Charlotte and Kahrayn, and Lisette survived a huge leap from Taz at the first big drop.

Coming to the pen, Katie rode hard on Changiz to give them a smooth passage through, and they all got fabulous leaps at the new trakehner over the stream and into the water complex.

They were neat through the corner at the top end of the course and covered the final fences – which included two big hedges with open ditches - in the blink of an eye for a victory by 1 sec.

“Slim and Kahrayn work well together up front, Changiz is so quick and Taz just keeps jumping,” said Joe, who recently produced his first winner under rules for John O’Neill’s private racing yard. “We were concerned about the trakehner but they barely looked at it.”

It was a bittersweet victory for team captain Stephen Clark, owner of Slim and out for the season after breaking ribs in a schooling fall.
“It’s great to win in such a competitive final,” he commented. “I’d rather be riding but it makes it exciting when they are so close.”

Charlotte Alexander, who took the ROR prize for the first retrained racehorse in the championship and also rode Saphir de Rheu and Ulck du Lin in other teams , said: “My partner Rob and my friend Hayley who helps me at events are Kahrayn’s biggest fans so they are thrilled. We planned to for the leader to swing wide at the top corner to avoid trouble and it paid off.”

Katie Richards, who has event horses and a career as an artist, was delighted with Changiz, on loan from Laura Close-Brooks, who rode him on the winning squad in 2016 (see panel).
“I took him on when Laura got married and now she’s just had a baby. He’s so easy – I can lead my son’s pony from him, and he grazes by the lorry after competing.”

It was a first championship win for Lisette and the characterful coloured sports horse Taz, bred to show jump but proving to be ‘too mad’ for anything but team chasing.
“He ran along one of the early hedges but I daren’t pull him out and he just flew it at a crazy angle,” she laughed.

Fox Grant Dot Com looked to have set a hot time, with hunt race queen Yvonne Goss and Untilla Legend streaking away in front. William Grant and Chef Junior ran on into the pen and behind them Phil Nicholls and Clare Shuckburgh were super-slick through the turnback hedges and up the hill. Will went to the buckle end over the last open ditch and then it was plain sailing to the finish.

“We really thought we’d got it but I’m lucky to be competing – Harry nicked a vein and I cricked my neck falling at the Farmers Bloodhounds event last week; it’s a good job Clare’s a physiotherapist and could put me right,” said Phil.

Relentless also put in a highly impressive round for third, finishing just a further 4sec behind. Sophie Walker, riding in her first open, did a great job on Keep On Track, swinging into the lead over the final fences, and winning the Junior trophy for the best performance by an under-25.
“Rowan Cope told me to stay behind over the first few fences as I didn’t know the track, but he came through really well at the end. My father Richard rode him in the final last year, and I’ve done hunt races with him this spring, winning the Wynnstay.”

In fourth place, Fox Grant Dot Com 2 took an early lead, but Anna Stone pinged the wrong side of the flag at the top corner and had to retrace her steps. Will Grant shared the lead with Helen Swaddle and they made some smart turns.
“My horse Skipper Robin has been running in hunt races and having him this fit means he’s much faster these days,” explained Will.

Cunning Stunts put up their best performance for years to take fifth, despite losing Becca Bullock at the second and a glance off for Emma Fox at the third.
“Harry MacLeod gave us a great lead for a while and then I just had to keep looking back to make sure he and Sarah (Coles) were still with me,” she said.
Sarah was delighted with the big jumping Honey, having a first run for a year after surgery to remove a sarcoid.

Worcestershire Hunt’s Master and His Bitch Pack were sixth running as a three, producing tight turns and bold jumping.

ALL ACTION AT THE SKINNER'S PET FOODS NATIONAL TEAM CHASE CHAMPIONSHIP 2018

Get ready for some exciting action at the Skinner’s Pet Foods National Team Chase Championship which takes place at The Fernie Team Chase on 31st March

Skinner’s Pet Foods, the manufacturer of premium quality dog food is to sponsor the British Team Chasing National Championship for the fourth year running.

Team Chasing is an exciting spectator sport where teams of three or four horses and riders gallop and jump over natural fences, with the team getting three or more members home in the fastest time judged the winner.

The Championship series comprises 11 qualifying events culminating in the final over the spectacular Fernie course. Its rolling terrain provides a natural amphitheatre for superb viewing as teams take on huge hedges, timber, drops and water and the winners will be worthy Skinner’s Pet Foods National Champions. First prize is £1000 and a stunning perpetual trophy, with special cash prizes for the highest placed RoR (Retraining of Racehorses) registered horses.

Reigning champions Wishful Thinkers head the line up  – can they retain their title? Close rivals Team Ride Away and Fox Grant Dot Com are also previous champions, and it looks to be a close contest this year.

There is also a packed supporting programme, with novice, intermediate and hunt classes,  plus a shopping village with local food and drink, making this a great day out for all the family.

Philip Cowen, Chairman of British Team Chasing, added, “The Skinner’s Pet Foods National Championship is keenly fought with the leading teams within seconds of each other at qualifiers this season. The Championship class always goes to the wire so it’s an unmissable date for fans of this high octane sport.”
